Fat Squirrel comes to the Hood

Ya'all know I live in the back of beyond ,
or as I loving refer to it ,
The Trailerhood .
( actually , my friend's sons named it that and it just stuck , but it fits )

I love the wild life we see here.
There is a herd of deer that come into the field across from us every afternoon.
There are hawks and bald eagles and coyotes ,
OK , I don't really like any of those ,
I am not a fan of predatory animals.
But it's the circle of life right ?
*sigh*

But...
I feed a plethora of birds year round .
A variety of Finches , Woodpeckers, nuthatches,
chickadees, a pair of cardinals and morning doves .
For a short time I can see Baltimore Orioles and in the summer ,
we have Hummingbirds.

I have two feeding stations and I go through a LOT of seed !

The one animal I have always been surprised we don't have is squirrels.
You would think they would be everywhere.
I mean they live in town ,
why wouldn't they be here ?

Then a few weeks ago ,
Fat Squirrel showed up .
This was one of those times I really wish I could take good pictures.
I made Hubs come to the window and watch him with me .
He was literally hanging upside down on my tree
with his front feet on the bird feeder ,
eating !

Then he climbed into the tray feeder .

I am AMAZED at how entertained I am by this squirrel !
I've named him Fat Squirrel cause he is just so puffy !
And I LOVE him !

I immediately told Hubs he MUST build me one of those squirrel chairs.
You know , the ones where there is a seat
and  a screw or nail to put an ear of corn on .
He said he would ,
but believe it or not he kept putting it off.
I really think he was thinking
"here we go again "
first crazy with the birds , now a squirrel .
But bless his heart ,
he never said it .

Anyway...
I took matters into my own hands .

I found this little chair at the thrift store !
YAH !
He had no choice then .

Not too pretty ,
but it works .

Then I became one of those people I used to make fun of.
The ones that actually go to the farm store
and buy cobs of corn in a bag !
YIKES !

It took me FOR*EV*ER to get a picture of Fat Squirrel in his chair.

and not even a good one ...

Cause here's the thing .
He doesn't really like the corn .
Funny , huh ?
He would rather eat the sunflower seeds from the bird feeders.
Go figure ....

He works hard at it too .

One day he was eating sunflower seeds off the ground
and Addie said ,
" look Grandma , a chipmunk ! "
Love that !

So ,
while most sane people are buying special feeders to keep the squirrels out ,
I'm just buying extra sunflower seeds ...

Squirrel!!!

I'm just the crazy bird / squirrel lady of the Trailerhood  :)

Here comes Peter Cottontail....

Today I am sharing a bit of Easter ( Spring ) decor.
You know about my little tree ,
you've seen it before , here and here and a few other places...
I quite love it .
You've seen my cloche collection before too.
I use them quite a bit also :)

My Mom's friend made these ceramic eggs every year for my kids.
When they left home I gave them all of them except one.
Last year , I had two made for Addie , Sarah and Ryan.
I had two made for each of them , so they would have them at their homes too.
Ryan still wanted to know why Emily had so many more than he did.
She said it was because he had only been in the family a couple of years and she had been in it her whole life !
 LOL! Love that girl ~

I got these cute little egg cups at a thrift store a couple weeks ago.
Cute huh?
You know I have a thing for birdies.
Speaking of which ,

See those cute little guys under glass (cloche )?
$1.25 - LOVE them !
Obvisiously , I bought them ....
The picture was  purchased several years ago. ( junk store , of course )
It makes me think of spring.
It had a horrible, wooden, scuffed up frame.
I'm embarassed to say , I JUST painted it.
What took me so long ?

Love it white.
Much better....

But my most prized possesion ( for Spring/ Easter ),

This ceramic bunny belonged to the hubs Grandma.
It was made by her sister, his Great - Aunt.
It sat on their TV year round.
Somehow, I was lucky enough to get it.
It is very special to me and I love having him on display .

I've got a little more for Spring/ Easter,
but it's outside.
And it's been yucky out there,
so I will wait to share it with you till it is more pleasant out there.
Hopefully that will be before April...

For the Birds

Well.....
I finally finished my last project for the "bird trees".
You remember the edible ornaments Addie and I made on Wednesday.
This is the other project I mentioned in that post.
I wanted to make my own suet balls to hang on the tree.
There a lots and lots of recipes out there , but this is the one I settled on.

1 cup lard
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup corn meal
1 cup oatmeal
1 cup mixed bird seed

I liked the fact it was all equal measurements.
Easy to remember.

The recipe said to melt the lard over a low heat.
I'm not that patient.
I used a glass bowl in the microwave.
The main reason they wanted you to melt over low heat was for safety.
Please be safe if you do this.
I covered the bowl with a paper towel because of splattering.

and took it out every minute  to stir.
Here I had added the peanut butter.

Of course , I felt the need to make a double batch .
Not real bright considering I hadn't made these before.
And had no idea if they would turn out.

Next I added the dry ingredients.
Guess I didn't get a picture of that mess.
( It really wasn't that bad)
After it had cooled ( actually I ran out of time , so I did this the next day )
I formed them into balls.
I had made loops out of jute a head of time.
Good thing too, cause my hands were such a sticky mess I wouldn't have been able to do it as I went.
This is also why there are no pictures of this step!
Anyway....
I formed the balls around the loops of jute,
then rolled them in more bird seed.

Kinda cute huh?

A double batch made 1 dozen.

Then into the freezer they went for 2 hours.
Actually longer, I was distracted taking down the Christmas decorations outside.
We've been having absolutely beautiful weather !
Mid 40's in January is VERY rare in my neck of the woods!

Anyway....
Here are my trees.
On my back deck ( which was free by the way, YAH! )

You don't think this kitty will scare the birds away do you ?

Am I happy this project is out of my head ?
YES!
Did it turn out how I had it pictured in my head?
Not entirely.
Will I make these again?
That remains to be seen.
This wasn't a hard project, just messy.
And not quite as "pretty" as I wanted.
However, if it attracts more birds to the back yard, I just might.

Have you ever had one of those projects?
That looked better in your head than it did in reality?
Oh well.... at least my birdies won't starve.

Happy as a bird #quote

(Almost Wordless) Wednesday with Addie

I have had a project in my head for a while now.
It really needed to get out !
If you read my blog , you know I LOVE my birds.
Even though we have had unseasonably warm weather here in Iowa,
I still feed the birds regularly.

Emily got me these wonderful trees for Christmas.
Even though she thought it was a weird gift suggestion.
( Bless Her Heart)

Notice the snow on my deck?
This is the most  we've had.
That is NOT a complaint!

My idea is to take these little trees and decorate them with edibles for the birds.
I got a little inspiration from Pinterest.

idea for the birds tree

Mine didn't turn out quite like these.
But.....
LOVE this quote, and the bird adn the color!!

Plus....
My Big Helper and I had fun making them.
First we cut shapes out of bread slices.

Then we spread peanut butter on the shapes.
( birds and butterflies)

Addie got a little ahead of me.

Then we pressed bird seed into the peanut butter.

Our finished project.

Close up.
We poked a hole in them with a straw and I tied jute through it to make a hanger.

I have one more project in this crazy head of mine ( that must get out SOON )
before I decorate the trees.

Bet you can't wait to see what that is huh?
Stay tuned !
